Sew-along: My Image #19: M1963 shirtdress

The pattern
  • High waisted shirtdress with buttons. Princess seams run down to the skirt. Skirt falls halfway on the lower legs and the sleeves fall a bit above the wrists. Made from 11 different parts.
Additional info:
  • EU 36-50 (US 6-20)
  • Recommended Fabrics : Lightweight like viscose, polyester-elastan or viscose-elastan.
  • 4/5 difficulty
  • pdf download and featured in Fall/Winter 2019/2020 issue.

The fabric
100% cotton of Yesfabric.eu. It has a weight of 100 gr/m2, which is fairly lightweight and it is a bit seethrough.

The line drawing
The line drawings show the dress better than the pictures. The princess seams can't be seen in the prints, and I think they won't be very visible in my dress as well. For fitting purposes these seams are amazing though.

The pattern instructions
Instructions in magazines are always minimal, but in this case there are picture instructions available that are especially helpful for the collar. The rest of the dress is pretty self explanatory.

Sewing

Here we see the facings. I decided to top stitch it to make it lay flatter.

I left the last 10 cm or 4 inches of the sleeves open. The seams I finished with mittered corners.

The collar that is made from two parts was a new feature for me. I can definitely use some more practice with that, but I like how it came out.

I used 9 buttons on the dress.

Pattern alterations
The pink dress is about 12" or 30 cm shorter than designed, because I wanted a bit shorter of a dress.
