Sew along: Homemade mini couture: mambo dress

The idea

The pink and taupe collored dear fabric is perfect for a gathered skirt. It is about 40 cm long and 100 cm wide and pretty much a rectangular. I'll combine it with a quilting cotton for the bodice. To spruce it up a bit I will also use some lace.

The pattern
Dress with cap sleeves and an arched seam in the bodice (which I left out). This part of the book has three different bodices and three different skirts to combine at your own insight.

Additional info:
  • 3-10yo (EU). I make a 4yo.
  • Recommended fabrics: cottons. It does suggest a zipper.
  • Not rated, picture guided instructions

The fabric

  • 0,5 meter printed poplin
  • ca 0,4 meter quilting cotton for bodice and lining.
  • ca 60 cm lace.

Cutting the fabric.
The skirt is a gathered skirt so a rectangular. It is about 1,5 times the waist circumference which makes it not a very full skirt. For a fuller skirt use 2 or 2,5 times the waist circumference.
The bodice is cut twice. Once for the outside and once for the lining.

Bodice front and lining. Bodice back in two parts and lining. Lace for at the bottom of the bodice.

Sew shoulders.

Sew neckline, turn right side out and press well. basted lace to the bodice.

Sew arm openings using buritto roll.

Place one halve between neckline and arm opening.

Fold the bottom shoulder piece over...

Pin and sew arm opening.

Right arm opening is now sandwiched in the left arm opening/shoulder. You can pull right side out at the top or bottom opening

Press well and do the same at the other side.

Sew the sides.

Pin back to front and back lining to front lining.

Gather skirt, sew to bodice and topstitch lining.

For the back I use a placket.

I added snaps to the closure.
