Sew along: self drafted Harem Pants.
The idea
I saw these awesome jumpsuits with Harem pants on them. I don't have a pattern, but how hard can it be. Start with any good fitting comfy trouserpattern you already have made.
The pattern
So I don't have a Harem pants pattern, but I saw some online that show the pattern pieces. Basicaly it is a trouser with the pantleg cut on the bias. I used the Lucille trousers for my start. I drew the top line of the trousers (with pleats or darts) and the crotchline and drew the pantleg on the bias. I measured how long I want the inner leg and outer leg to be and drew them.
So in a diagram it is like above. (A) is your trouser pattern (any that fits well). You copy the waistband and the crotch curve. Line (B) is drawn under 45 degrees, making it on the bias. The length is your desired innerleg length. You could use the existing length on your trouser pattern, just add a bit (ca 10%) more to make sure your trouser is still the required length after putting it on. The length of line (C) is your outer leg length starting from your waistline. You might copy the length of your trouser pattern, again add about 10% to make sure it still has enough length. Because of the bias the harem pants will 'bloom' a bit and therefore use up some of the length of the pieces. The angle between (B) and (C) determine how wide your leg will be. It can be very tapered to create a harem pants that is snug at the ankles or make it even wider.
Do the same for both the front and back (you likely will have different crotch curves for them).
Make sure you use the same closing as your trouser pattern or adjust accordingly
I chose to have the outerleg be shorter than the innerleg and to have the leg taper in a little bit. The pattern has darts, pleats and a zipper. I'll ommit the darts and make som smaller pleats. That way I can put the pants on without a zipper and use an elastic band.
For a very wide leg the pattern layout could be like this:
Additional info:
- Use own sizes
- Recommended fabrics: drapy fabrics, knit or woven
- rated easy (self rated)
- ca 2,4 meter African Wax.
Cutting the fabric.
Four parts to be cut on the bias. I'll use the wrong side of the fabric for the left side of the pants so I can mirror the pattern. Because the print is diagonal, the lines on the legs will be vertical.
